Rolls-Royce to mark the 100th anniversary of its legendary Silver Ghost has developed the limited edition Phantom Silver. This special model, of which only 25 are to be produced, pays homage to the one of the most famous automotive names of all time. The Silver Ghost was first produced in the year 1906 with the main intention of promoting the then new Rolls-Royce 40/50 hp six-cylinder model. The Silver Ghost has helped to develop the Rolls-Royce reputation for reliability and engineering excellence. The name Silver Ghost was coined in 1907 by Rolls-Royce Managing Director, Claude Johnson by virtue of its silver coachwork and its extraordinary stealth-ness. The original Silver Ghost was registered as AX-201 and competed in the 1907 Scottish Reliability Trial wherein it won the gold medal in its class for hill climbing speed and reliability. For that year, the Silver Ghost was able to break the world record for a non-stop motor run, covering London to Glasgow route 27 times with a total mileage of 14,371 miles. From 1907 to 1925 more than 6,000 Silver Ghosts were built and was sold in different parts of the world. And until today majority of those Silver Ghost are still in their immaculate conditions. To give tribute to the specifications of the original, the new Limited Edition Phantom Silver is finished in a new Bespoke paint, Metallic Ghost Silver. It s equipped with 21-inch wheels that have chrome centers and on top of the grille is hallmarked with solid silver Spirit of Ecstacy. The interior of the Phantom Silver is a Rose Leaf or Cr me Light leather which is accompanied by seat piping and headrests embroidered with the Rolls-Royce interlinked RR badge. Straight grained Santos Palissander wood veneer is used throughout. The same veneer is also used on a specially designed presentation box that houses the key, the two solid silver key fobs and a specially commissioned solid silver Conway Stewart fountain pain. Rolls-Royce Limited has been nationalized in the year 1971 due to the financial collapse of the company which was attributed to the development of the RB211 jet engine. Then in 1973 the British government sold the Rolls-Royce car business to allow the Rolls-Royce Limited to concentrate on jet engine manufacturing. In the year 1980 Rolls-Royce Motors was acquired by Vickers. Then in 1998 Vickers decided to sell Rolls-Royce Motors. BMW was among the interested buyers since it is already the supplier of engines and other components for Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars. Unfortunately, their final offer of 340m was outbid by Volkswagen who offered 430m.
